A Lot More About "Me" & My Works

What "I" Do.

We make quality, digital creations called "Mix-taped Diaries," and sell them here along with T-Shirts and gadgets. We are one DJ, one designer, and a lot of developers (or just "Creatives"), who are loosely-tied together by music, graphics, and luv for computer programs.

Who "I" Am.

This site is Phantom  Records 🐺 Limited (formerly Phantom Records GP).  "We" are legal entities owned by people.

Where "My" Site's Name Came From.

Here is a a torturously long note to address copycat sites and confusion that I moved here from the homepage to this section, where it belongs. If you like reading, you'll like this explanation. If you don't, you can skip this and stay confused:

I'm the only one on my label and it’s a marketing label, not a recording label. It’s a record of many things – all related to my skill set – in a single place. It’s an embodiment of my abilities in a single website, without using my real name in the domain name (for privacy and cyber safety). This site is my phantom record. I changed my description as the laws changed, and, as I met owners of record labels, named conventionally, who confused me for someone who cold sign one of their artists, work with one of their artists, or listen to one of their artists' music. They sign recording artists so they're a record label and they took Phantom Records to be the same thing. It's not, it's a DJ's label for selling what DJs make in today's copyright landscape which is still complicated for a DJ.

DJ-ing is not a performance that is legally the same as singing, or as a recording artist performing their music or someone else's. A DJ as an artist is still very new. I am the one who has created the playlists that are copyrighted here and those are text works of art, in the world of copyright law, that I own and have the right to do with whatever is within Intellectual Property law in the United States. It's not about the music, as bizarre as that sounds, it's about the record of what is done with the music, and for what purpose.

I know what's important because I've been working on this for many years as a pet project. It also serves as a demonstration of what I can do.

The text works of art that I own it, the playlists here, I do not license.  I sell them. I'm doing it now because laws and infrastructure have evolved to allow it. The rest of this is section is me talking about DJs. You can skip the rest if all you were interested in was the Intellectual Property part of this.

As a DJ, on my own DJ label, or marketing label for one DJ, me, or publishing label, or distributing label, I make copyrighted works of art, called "playlists," and, only now, is it possible to separate these copyrighted works from the sound recordings in the mixes I made. Doing that has been challenging to say the least but it was a challenge that was fun to win even though no one knew what I was doing, because I had not discussed it this way ahead of making this site and ahead of the laws going into effect that supported this. The copyrighted musical works of art by sound recording artists, are not the focus of this site and there is no music here. I'm sorry if that's confusing too. What is copyright protectable is the important part of all of this for me. I am the maker of the "playlists" that are here. I sell them here, as part of this "buying experience," I do not sell the music, or the works of art that make up the music, better described as sound recordings. In the United States, doing this online responsibly, is extremely complicated and is even more difficult to speak of in plain English without confusing someone. So to simply that, I made the registered trademark, DJ Experience® to move forward past a legal impasse. That made things easier for everyone and reduced confusion.

The brand name, DJ Experience®, makes it easy to discuss from the point of view of this site's decision-maker, who is behind the works here, as a single person, instead of as a group of people, because in the music world, groups are more complicated to work with than single member artists, or just "artists." It was far too complicated discussing this as a "team," because that automatically implies a "group as an artist" and increases complexity exponentially. So this, done this way, for simplicity's sake, brought all of the confusion back down to Earth, so to speak. I am a brand, a registered trademark, and I am only one person. It took roughly one million U.S. dollars to get to this point and I led myself here over all of those years with everything I have done, andI owe absolutely nothing financially to anyone for creating what has been created nor to do I have or owe anyone any debt related to this. How I did it is private. Why I did it should be obvious now, because it was a fun way to learn, get an education, motivate myself to keep working and explain to those who were frustrated with my private use of my time why I have no time for them.

All of this confuses most people. Most people think that I’m here to sign recording artists and that confusion will continue for those not reading this and based on what else they read. I can't help that. I don't sign artists. My goal is stay up-to-date with copyright law so I can sell my copyrighted works of art without breaking copyright law in the United States or in the United Kingdom, and have fun making the "buying experience" associated with doing that. In other words, have fun making this website, which was fun to make. I made my first "buying experience" using a website in 1997, and "broke even" (it wasn't in the United States at all). This is only my second one. It took this long to stay out of the way of change while everything governing this changed and is still changing.

What "I" Sell Here: Original Works of Art & Original Works of Sound.

My playlists are my works of art. My graphic designs, made personally, and independent of any design contracts or employment, that appear all over this site, are my works of art, as well. I sell my works of art here as part of building this "buying experience" and for fun. I sell other fun things here, as well, that are physical, but those are affected by every change in tax law and based on so many factors that whenever there's a change, I lock them while I update anything that affects them, then I put them back. It's not fun for me to sell physical items. So you won't see many, because I'm in no hurry to do that. I did that in my first "buying experience," when I "broke even" and I know what's involved in it and I know what's not fun and what is. Very little in selling physical items is fun for me.

Hence, this is my flagship “buying experience” because it is designed to be fun for me to make, which it was, and fun for me to run, which it is, so far. It's also a demonstration of my applied background (professional, educational, and purchased training). I sell art, and I sell my abilities by allowing a visitor to 'experience it' first hand, online. I hate talking about it to competitors, recruiters, in public, or with employers. I love talking about it in school, in class, writing about it to others who do this for fun.

I have no interest in competing from this site. It's not fun for me. I couldn’t care less who’s confused by this. As you can see, it took enough words just to 'simply say' this and for most of you this will only raise more questions, questions that I will not attempt to answer further. For more, you can: hire a lawyer, buy a book, Google something, or ask your favorite artificial intelligence. "We're" not here to teach. I'm not here to teach either.

What "My" Company Name Really Means.

Previous sites we made were described as Record Labels for DJs. But we're not a normal record label and we don't sign artist or finance careers. It's a poetic way of saying we're a marketing business that markets our one DJ, as an Artist, as a Digital Creator, on this DJ's "label". It was supposed to be a fun and funny way to describe something simple and that's all a "phantom record" is to us - a DJ's mix, an album without a performing artist that you can see performing the mix. Our DJ is not a stage DJ so you have never seen him perform. You can only hear his performance listening to one of these mixes and the new laws confuse this because now a "performance" has legal meaning. For a DJ, it means playing a mix at concert or during a paid DJ stage show, such as a DJ competition with paying listeners in attendance, and that sold tickets for attendance.

This is not what Phantom Records does. The performance is what our DJ produced over all the years of honing his skill, resulting in what you hear here. Those who implemented our previous sites, added multimedia rich features, including ones many conventional record labels use on their sites, to save costs of hiring developers and designers outside of the company, and this was an application of our DJ's education, which is a custom-made degree, created to support what you see here at the lowest cost possible. It turned out to be confusing to up-and-coming artists, who wrote us looking for a record deal. So we wrote this to "un-confuse" (or to 'untangle') all of that.  I bet this has only made it more confusing! I will put all of this into ChatGPT and ask it if it's confusing. Then it will type something less confusing and I will place it here. Then we will all see if I can finally simplify this interesting story so it's not wordy and boring. It was fun living it! These boring words do it quite the injustice!

A "User Experience" Used to Be Called A "User Friendly Experience" If It Was Easy to Use.

When I chose my name my "web guy" was only in high school and wouldn't have known another "phantom records" business from a hole in the wall. These days, to highlight ourselves and to reduce or eliminate confusion, we link our sites together to each other so a curious visitor can click around the links and eventually discover our related webs and the ones that are only related because they are named similar. "Link-surfing" those links shows how many sites share similar names and a visitor doing this will quickly see which ones are mine and which ones are completely unrelated. You can figure it out after reading this long page because writers have unique writing styles even if they are not professional authors.

All About Copyrights, Briefly, i.e., Copyrights for Dummies.

When we chose our name our "guy" was only in high school and wouldn't have known another "phantom records" business from a hole in the wall. These days, to highlight ourselves and to reduce or eliminate confusion, we link our sites together across each other so a curious visitor can click around those links and eventually discover our related webs. "Link-surfing" those links shows how the webs are related, better than text-only, and introduces other fun sites made by the same Creator, DJ Experience ®.

How Copyrights Affect Mixtapes, or Mixed Tapes.

Together, this site and related sites are small "user experiences" designed based on UX ("user experience") principles, called Usability principles, as opposed to, the broader UX field that has to do with broader topics, and bigger budgets. The word "experience" is a way to describe something that usually has to be "experienced" to make sense of it because many will have their own way of describing it after they "experience it".

To Learn More, Do What "I" Do: Google It!

To learn more about this strange job title called a "user experience designer" or "UX designer" or "usability designer," Google these three keyword phrases. Include their punctation, e.g., everything in bold including the quotation marks:

Search phrase 1: "define:user experience designer".

Search phrase 2: "define:ux designer".

Search phrase 3: "define:multimedia designer".

After reading that you could understand what I do. It's not difficult to understand and it is very fun to do as a job. You have to have good taste in appearances to do this job well.

PRIVACY IN THE United States COMPARED TO PRIVACY IN Other Places

In the United States we call privacy in business "confidentiality." In other countries with stronger privacy protections than in the United States, it's just called "privacy." We strive to follow the strictest versions of privacy and confidentiality by having "no comment" to public questions. It's just easier on everyone.

WHY "We" CARE

We care because designers, DJs, developers, Creatives, and others living around the world, who maintain online ecosystems care. To address the lack of professional literacy leading to the sales abuse (not marketing abuse) we experienced, we changed our practices. We removed information from the Internet. We did that because we were receiving physical junk mail, electronic junk email, dozens of robocalls, and distracting pop-up-ads that are indistinguishable from hacking to the untrained eye. It distracted our work for months. Those distractions added up. We now maintain new policies and practices to fight it. When we write about Internet etiquette like this, we believe we are helping improve online trust for anyone accessing the Internet, especially if they access it using a computer.

🧑🏾‍💻 More Things About Me! 🧑🏾‍💻

I have to admit, many say I'm "different".

But in the United States, every entertainment business maker, like me, is "different"! That's the Entertainment Industry here! It's weird! Take it from me! But get used to it if you want to work in it! That includes modeling! So to help with the weirdness compared to other countries, here are a few tidbits about me, as a Hospitality-based Business Owner, so you know who (and what) I am, as well as, what my values are:

***  .The 5 ABCs of Me. ***

1. I am abstinent. This past Saturday, April 13th, less than a week before a day known in the USA as "National Hanging Out Day", I was baptized a Latter Day Saint. I 'timed it' that way on purpose. Latter Day Sainthood is  my third baptism and my third 'type' of Christian religion. I 'add' religions together, I don't throw the previous ones away. I "converted" to Latter Day Sainthood because it's the most robust of the 'Christian' faiths. In other words, I 'layer' religious doctrines together to create a complete collection of Do's and Don't until I'm happy with it. I'm happy with my collection now! Yay!

2. Related to religion, I made this site for customers I 'click with', and visa versa. In other words, I choose music that fits with my values, the ones my religion promotes. I'm nowhere near perfect but I do have a known playbook (Latter Day Sainthood) for my behavior and I'm revealing it by blogging about it right here.

*** .Apart from this, I am relatively boring. ***

3. This is what's boring, but necessary, for me (compared to sports, dancing, video games, and streaming, the things I like to do): cooking, cleaning, dusting, paying bills, washing my color-delicates in warm water and soap pods at home, when I feel like it. Instead of using cold water or our "community laundry room". (It's expensive to use it.) That said, although those things are boring, they bring me a sense of normality. After several years of abnormal living due to the very bizarre 'worldwide zombie apocalypse' we all call the Pandemic in the Us, I'm glad to be back to "normal." It lasted three years here, from 2020-2023.

4. During those abnormal three years, I learned so many "domestic-home-maker trade secrets" I can rightly call myself a "Mister Mom"! LoL! So funny! But still, those things are boring to me, so enjoy my site for some fun because I don't sell cleaning supplies here!

*** .And if you see me in person somewhere, you can ask me about my boring domestic life. I'm shy about entertainment. But not about "house work". ***

Do you see what I mean?

5. "I'm just different"!

Does Anybody Remember This Big Ass Invitation Above? 🤣

In 1986, for my second House Party, which dad asked me to throw as a matching fund raiser for Mayor Tom Bradley’s Los Angeles Mayoral campaign, I used a math equation to predict how many invitations I had to have handed out to make enough money to meet the goal, and pay back the $2,000 in cash it would take to buy the music, DJ gear, supplies, and snacks to pull it off.

-

Thanks to my high school friends who volunteered, Dad made his goal and Tom Bradley became Mayor, making history in the process. My friends and I turned into a special cohort, around music, trust, and faith in each other. This entire business is dedicated to them.

-

They're all still Facebook friends and they’ll see this “blast shout-out” from the past the moment this page goes live!

-

I missed the good old days before I made this page  but, I never forgot them, or the high school cohort that made it soar, not just happen.

To Celebrate Our Teamwork I Made A Facebook Group for Our Old School Crew! Whoop! 💹 👨🏽‍✈️ ⌨️

My dad said I never made any money because I never paid the volunteers and that we would never have "gotten" a permit to throw a house party that big had it not been for the fund-raising aspect of it; and that that's the main problem with residential zoning – it stifles home-based businesses that cannot or do not operate quietly with zero impact on neighborhood housing values. That's a mouth full, but he told the truth! That's still true today, almost 40 years later!

-

Even today no one wants party-goers crowding into their neighborhood. So, this section is to show that I always wished I had thought to pay the volunteers, including paying myself beyond simply paying back the loan and buying "stuff" for the event.

-

In our defense, there's a reason for that: I know why now.

-

BECAUSE my friends didn't care about that!

-

They were “ride or die” Honors Students at a Prep School everyone (not part of the school) thought were “boring squares.” And I lived so close they could walk to the party and still go back to school in time to do homework, if it were on a weekday, which would have been STUPID!

-

On a weekend they promised they would show up if I DJ'd it after I said I didn't want to DJ an empty house. And they showed up!

-

Laugh with me because all of us know we had so much fun getting near straight-As, playing Basketball to win, and studying so many hours our Sophomore class got sick from “homework exhaustion.” It was still fun I wouldn't give one memory back. 🥰

-

The school begged us to lighten up, saying that we had our whole lives ahead of us to be workaholics.

-

We lived hard! Studied hard! Danced and “Drama-Acted/Theatre’d” hard, and fought like champs for each other. You might as well call us the Breakfast Club!

-

😁 True Story

-

So that all my CPS alum know I made it through the pandemic walking the streets of Las Vegas alone, and making friends, here is proof: the DJ Playlists stored on my iPhone I made while homeless that Summer.
