Common Sense: Listening Etiquette

A Few Tips for Drama-free Listening

Headphones

Please use headphones to listen to our Mix Shows when in public. Use common sense and choose the best option for your surroundings. Avoid isolating your senses, for example, avoid listening to our Mix Shows in both ears with headphones that are so loud you cannot hear surrounding sounds – isolating your senses that way is hazardous to your awareness and can lead to self-inflicted harm, or, clumsiness. We suggest using a single ear to listen if your headphone arrangement supports this.

Cars

If you listen to our Mix Shows in your car, please be mindful of your surroundings, even while listening at home. Some jurisdictions have noise ordinances or neighbors who work from home, sleep during the day and work during the overnight hours, or, are simply enjoying a quiet book and would rather not hear our "Mix Show." To know for sure, use the following rule of thumb: anything louder than 50 decibels is yelling. At 60 decibels, the neighbors can hear from an adjacent home through open or vented windows. If you use a "sound meter" you can know with certainty if you select an effective meter. The sound meter tip is a Power User tip. You can also find a sound meter in App form if you prefer a software meter instead of a physical meter.
